Incorporate Music in Your Homeschool with Merry Bells

Playing with music in your homeschool is a crucial part of creating a relaxed and fun learning environment for kids. Music has a powerful effect on mood, emotion, anxiety, and stress. Keeping a little music in your day is sometimes exactly what kids need to feel safe and relaxed while they learn.

Not every homeschool parent is a musician and many of us don’t have the extra money or time to devote to music classes for our kids. But you can still teach them the fundamentals of music at home, with inexpensive tools that are designed so anyone can use them, no previous music study needed. Merry Bells is one of those tools.

I was compensated for my time writing this post. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

Merry Bells are an easy and inexpensive way to add music in your homeschool

Merry Bells come with CD’s that have colored coded videos to follow as you play. It is much like some apps, where kids have to push notes on a tablet as they drop down the screen. No need to read music. The colors dropping on the screen match the color of the bells.

Merry Bells are a great opportunity to get everyone in the family together and have a little fun trying to play a song. You will need several people to play a song, as there won’t be always be time to put one bell down and pick the next one up before it needs to be rung.

If you do morning time with your kids before lessons, this is a great activity to incorporate into that time. You may even find your kids want to play it again during their free time. We tried these out during summer break and my kids just think it is a fun game to play. They have no idea they are refining their musical ear, learning rhythm, or developing eye-hand coordination.

Merry Bells are a fun for little kids and big kids alike

When I first saw Merry Bells I thought they were a cute way to introduce young children to the idea that they can play music themselves. But they are actually enjoyable for a large age-range of kids because it takes attention and cooperation in addition to great timing to be able to get through a whole song together without mistakes.

Although Merry Bells are easy to pick up and start using right away, they also provide just enough challenge to make learning how to use them interesting. As long as your family can laugh at your own mistakes, you are going to have a lot of fun playing Merry Bells together.

The summer is a great time to introduce something like Merry Bells to your kids. Perfect for raining days or afternoons where the kids are just getting bored or restless, you can pull out the patriotic songs and practice learning something to play for the 4th of July.

Merry Bells are easy to use out of the box

Each bell plays its own note and does not need to be tuned. Every song is in the key of C, so you won’t need to worry about any sharps or flats. I checked each bell with my phone tuner, and they all play the note they are supposed to. You get the cleanest sound from them if you play them with a little flick of the wrist.

In addition to the videos you can also print out sheets of the lyrics with colored codes for which bells to play. This is a great tool as you can then slow down the timing of the music to practice getting all the notes in before playing at speed. The Merry Bells music also includes harmony options for those that are ready to move past the stage of just playing the melody.

My kids’ ages 10-15 having a blast with the Merry Bells during summer break.

You can also easily turn any piece of music that is written in the key of C into a song to play with Merry Bells. Just use some highlighters over the notes, or underline them with the matching colors and your child will soon be practicing reading real notes while also having fun with the bells.

I do suggest any who is new to playing music start with songs you already know, so you are familiar with how it should sound. To learn new songs, look up those songs, listen to them and sing along for a week before you attempt to play them with the Merry Bells. This will help ensure you practice the correct timing.
